The original version of Burlesque featured words from the first scene of Arthur Schnitzler’s play, La Ronde (1900). On the bank of the Danube, a woman of the street asks a young soldier, “Want to come with me, Angel Face?” Taking care not to slip into the river, and warning him, “Not so loud, could be a cop around, he might be lost,” she leads him to an amorous encounter.... Soon after that, I made the story less explicit by transforming the vocal parts into instrumental characters. The title, Burlesque, is a bit of a tease, suggesting its comical musical material.
