Description
| The China Government Employee Database – Qing Jinshenlu (CGED-Q JSL) is a database constructed by the Lee-Campbell Group from records of officials in the Jinshenlu. This was a roster of serving regular officials that was prepared every three months during the Qing by the Department of Selection (文選司) under the Ministry of Personnel (吏部). In principle, the Jinshenlu listed almost every civil office from the central government down to low-level county administrative offices including information about the official’s name, place of origin, ethnicity, location of post, job title, and other details. The China Government Employee Database-Qing (CGED-Q) Jinshenlu (JSL) Public Release consists of records of Qing government civil servants with regular appointments transcribed from the quarterly editions of the Jinshenlu (缙绅录) from 1900 to 1912, 1850 to 1864, and 1760 to 1798. Please see the User Guide for caveats. The data in the public releases are exactly as transcribed from the original sources, and do not include any of the corrections, modifications, or additions we have made for our own analysis. Documentation includes a User's Guide in Chinese, and tutorials for analyzing the data in R. If you are an instructor and have used this data in your teaching, a student who has used this for a class paper, or you are a non-academic who has used these data, we would like to hear about it. | The data in the public releases releases are as much as possible direct transcriptions of the contents of the original sources. For this release, we have not attempted to ‘correct’ any mistakes or inconsistencies that were apparent in the original data since doing so would require us to introduce our assumptions. Along these lines, the release data have not been processed to reconcile differences in orthography for the same character, link individuals, and so forth. In our own analysis, we use data that we have processed extensively to resolve inconsistencies, correct problems, and link individuals across time. Please make sure to download and read carefully the README (声明) files as well as the User Guide (用户指南) along with the data. It is urgent that users understand the requirements re acknowledging the funding source that supported the creation of the database and its public release and citation of the User Guide and relevant publications. It is also urgent that users understand the known limitations and caveats regarding the data that are described in the User Guide. From August 2026, we are including a created personal identifier, person_id, to make it easier to connect records of the same person in different editions. The procedure for record linkage is described in Yu et al. (2026). The reference is below. We continue to revise our record linkage procedures, thus identifiers may change in future releases. We provide the identifier as a convenience, but do not take responsibility for them. For research intended for publication we encourage users to manually check some links. This is especially the case for research on specific subsets of officials, since linkage may be more successful for certain types of officials than others. To make maintenance and upkeep easier, now we are only uploading single files containing all publicly released CGED-Q JSL, in tab-delimited format. Please see the Lee-Campbell Group CGED-Q Project web page for a detailed introduction to the project and the latest updates. Please see the CGED-Q resource site for STATA code to create flag variables for record selection, or clean or categorize important variables.
